On Replay - “Grimes - Oblivion”

Think of, Mariah Carey for example. Now, think of j-pop and 80’s synthesisers. You’ve got a bit of Grimes! This multi instrumentalist is truely blowing my mind right now and I just can’t stop listening to her. As soon as I actually get this album, I’ll make a review! Have a listen and tell me what you think?

One To Check, Myles J - Dillacubes

What a chill beat tape! Fellow tumblr user Myles James (skateboard-m) has a recently released tape on bandcamp that you should check out. Expect a review soon too!

Download it at his bandcamp here!

Current Anticipated Albums Of 2012

My giddy aunt, there is SO much to look forward this year for music in my eyes, here’s a potentially long list of new releases I’m looking forward to, as well as their accompanying singles/tracks if I can find them!

1. DEATH GRIPS - THE MONEY STORE

Exmillitary was seriously one of my sleeper hits for last year, originally something I couldn’t comprehend is now something that I pretty much can’t “unhear” and in a good way. The next album looks way more experimental, way more abstract and just generally much more interesting. PLUS THEY GOT SIGNED! WHAT!? Haha so stoked for them.

2. VARIOUS ODD FUTURE RELEASES (OF TAPE VOL.2, WOLF, NUMBERS)

The year seems to be full of Odd Future! Tyler’s new album (which has quite a bit to live up to as ALWAYS), the new complete crew tape set to be released and Mellowhype with something completely new finally (if it’s anything like Hodgy’s material on his new Untitled EP, I will DEFINITELY look forward to that), just gonna be radical.

3. SQUAREPUSHER - UFABULUM.

Squarepusher back with a new 100% electronic project? SIGN ME UP! There’s only been slight previews and inklings of the album to come so far, but I can’t wait to hear more!

4. PARAMORE - TBA

Paramore has been one of my very favorite bands for a long time, indeed since I heard their very first album, All We Know Is Falling. I’ve been wanting my fix for a long time, so hurry up already guys! Seriously XD

5.THE JOY FORMIDABLE - TBA.

After seeing them live, I took the time to buy The Joy Formidable’s debut album, The Big Roar, straight after Reading Festival. With such a brilliant reception from myself, I would absolutely love to hear a new album from them, but lets get some new material first!

6. MARINA AND THE DIAMONDS - ELECTRA HEART

I was converted by my girlfriend to Marina after borrowing her debut album, The Family Jewels, and engaging in some truely game changing pop vibes from Ms Diamandis. Obsessions is still one of my favorite songs from the album and if this single, Homewrecker, is anything like the new album insists to be, I’ll love the new relatively more serious and dangerous side of Marina.

Other valid mentions!

Billy Talent are set to release a new album in July, I want more talent, bad.

Deftones are rumoured for a new release this year, I had a binge in buying all of their albums recently… so worth it

OF COURSE KILLSWITCH ENGAGE HAVE TO RELEASE A NEW ALBUM WITH JESSE WHICH I WILL INSTANTLY PREORDER AND THEN LIVE ALONE WITH IN MY CAVE OF A BEDROOM FOR AT LEAST A MONTH.

MGMT are also rumoured to be releasing a new album, Congratulations was a true grower for me and I loved the jump they made into more progessive sounds.

Municipal Waste has a new album set to be released! I just hope its slightly better than Massive Aggressive, The Art Of Partying will always remain my favourite MW album.

THE OFFSPRING HAVE SOMETHING NEW? WHAAAAA? Also Tenacious D are coming back with Rise of the Fenix!

So so much to look forward to, expect me to at least review one or two!

“Submerse - Streams EP (2010)” EP Review

Remember my feature on Future Garage? Remember Submerse? Well I FINALLY got my virtual hands on an official Submerse release, possibly one of his biggest EP releases, Streams.

I was already familliar with a few of his other self released mixtapes such as the Gundam EP, filled with anime samples and japanese vocals. This EP is a much more conventional garage/2-step release, something you would hear back in the good old days. Generally uptempo, funky, yet subtle sample usage not overtaking the beats, a solid solid element for every track featured on this EP. Everything generally sounds old school, and I absolutely love that.

2 favorite tracks:

1. 1UP. I had featured this track in my future garage feature, but it is obviously a huge like of mine. With a chilly feel akin to the likes of Burial but sped up in the slightest for a more funky feel, this track is just fully set of by the Ghostbusters sample before every drop reinstating the “We came, we saw, we kicked it’s ass!” quote made famous in the film. Hilarious, and fitting for the great beat following it.

2. STAY. Interestingly, this is the last track on the EP. Whilst the tracks featured in the middle are the ham if you will, I just felt that 1UP and this track are the bread that make this a complete tasty Future Garage sandwich (if that metaphor is even vaild). The track features a lot of traditional 2-step, funky house and Garage patterns that just hit me in all the right places.

This EP was only £2.49 on the iTunes store, an absolute bargain for the 4 little gems you get with said EP. It just leaves you waiting for more however, but I’ve been doing that for a while with Submerse. Just release a full on mixtape for once you legend!

It’s GREAT, man!
